This decision comes after heated public hearings and protests.
The Controversy
The plan, which would have transformed space above the Minskoff Theater (home to The Lion King), faced fierce opposition from the Broadway League. They argued the casino would severely impact Broadway ticket sales and the livelihoods of the 100,000 people employed by the industry.
Jason Laks, president of the Broadway League, voiced concerns about risking Broadway's success for a project that could be located elsewhere.
Conversely, supporters like Kris Kohler of the Mason Tenders’ Council PAC, believed the casino would revitalize Times Square and bring new life to the area.
The Bigger Picture
The Times Square casino bid was one of eight competing for three downstate gaming licenses. The rejection leaves the remaining proposals in the running for the licenses, which are to be awarded by the end of the year.
