NYC Expands Alcohol Sales to More Businesses
New York State just made a big change that will affect many businesses and nightlife in the city: more venues can now serve alcohol!
The State Liquor Authority (SLA) recently updated its policies, allowing a wide range of adult-oriented recreational businesses to apply for liquor licenses. This means places like comedy clubs, pool halls, axe-throwing venues, VR arcades, go-kart tracks, escape rooms, and even art galleries can now serve drinks.
Who's Eligible?
To get a license, businesses must meet these conditions:
- Their main business must be a lawful adult entertainment or recreational business open to the public.
- They must follow all state and local laws (zoning, building codes, public safety).
- They must demonstrate responsible alcohol service, adhering to SLA rules.
This policy change is a significant modernization of New York's hospitality industry, allowing for the combination of entertainment and alcohol sales. The SLA cites Governor Hochul's directive to update regulations for economic growth as the impetus for the change.
Industry Reactions
Industry leaders are largely positive, highlighting the potential for economic growth, job creation, and innovation. However, Friends of Recovery New York (FOR-NY) expressed some concern regarding the increased alcohol accessibility and urged the state to invest in public health and recovery infrastructure. They advocate for legislation (S4595) to create a 5% excise tax on alcoholic beverages to fund substance use prevention and treatment.
This shift could redefine NYC's entertainment landscape, but it also raises questions about public health and responsible alcohol consumption.
