NYC Casino Showdown: Yonkers and Queens in the Lead
Two downstate casino proposals are poised for approval in Yonkers and Queens. Unlike Manhattan's proposals, which all faced rejection, these contenders are expected to advance to the state's Gaming Facility Location Board.
Yonkers and Queens Casinos: Smooth Sailing Ahead?
The Empire City Casino and Resorts World New York City at Aqueduct have encountered less local opposition than their Manhattan counterparts. They are anticipated to receive unanimous approval, becoming the first to clear the Community Advisory Committees (CACs).
Other Contenders in the Race:
- Throggs Neck (Bronx): Strong community support anticipated.
- Citi Field (Queens): Backed by Mets owner Steve Cohen, also expected approval.
- Coney Island: Facing significant community opposition, approval is unlikely.
Governor Hochul's Statement
Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of community support in the casino selection process. She highlighted the potential economic benefits (jobs) while acknowledging potential drawbacks (traffic). She stated that "the communities have spoken" regarding the Manhattan proposals.
What's Next?
The state's four-member Gaming Facility Location Board will make its final decision on up to three locations by December 1st.
