NYPD Chief of Department Resigns Amid Sexual Misconduct Scandal
New York City is reeling from the sudden resignation of NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey, the highest-ranking uniformed officer, following allegations of sexual misconduct. The New York Post reported that a female subordinate accused Maddrey of demanding, and receiving, sexual favors in exchange for overtime approval at NYPD headquarters.
The NYPD confirmed Maddrey's resignation and stated that they are conducting a thorough investigation into the allegations. The city's Department of Investigation and the Manhattan District Attorney's Office are also investigating these serious claims.
John Chell, formerly the Chief of Patrol, has been appointed as the acting chief of department. Philip Rivera, previously Chief of Transportation, will now lead the Transportation division.
The resignation comes amidst a turbulent time for the NYPD, with Maddrey facing prior accusations of harassment and discrimination. Mayor Eric Adams released a statement expressing deep concern and emphasizing the ongoing investigations.
This high-profile case highlights serious issues of power abuse within the NYPD and raises significant concerns about workplace safety and accountability.
