NYC's Trash Revolution Expands to Brooklyn!
Mayor Adams and DSNY Acting Commissioner Lojan announced that Brooklyn Community District 2 will be the next neighborhood to fully embrace the city's revolutionary Empire Bins trash containerization program. Following the immense success in West Harlem, this initiative aims to significantly reduce rat infestations and improve the overall cleanliness of the borough.
Key Aspects of the Brooklyn Expansion:
- Phase 1 (Fall 2025): Installation of Empire Bins at schools in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.
- Phase 2 (2026): Expansion to all schools and high-density residential buildings in the community district.
- Building Types: Schools, buildings with over 30 units will receive Empire Bins; those with 10-30 units will have a choice between Empire Bins and smaller wheelie bins.
The initiative builds upon the success seen in West Harlem, where the use of Empire Bins, serviced by North America's first automated side-loading garbage trucks, has led to a significant decrease in rat sightings for nine consecutive months.
This expansion demonstrates the city's ongoing commitment to cleanliness and a higher quality of life for its residents. The program's success may lead to further expansion across the city in the coming years.
The Broader Context of the "Trash Revolution":
The Brooklyn expansion forms a part of Mayor Adams' broader "Trash Revolution", which encompasses several phases, including:
- Changes to residential and commercial waste set-out times.
- Containerization requirements for food-related businesses.
- Containerization mandates for chain businesses with five or more locations.
- Container requirements for all businesses.
- Container requirements for low-density residential buildings (1-9 units).
- Significant funding commitment for DSNY to maintain cleanliness initiatives.
This initiative marks a major step towards cleaner and safer streets in New York City.
