NYC's San Gennaro Feast: A Little Italy Tradition
The Feast of San Gennaro, a beloved NYC tradition, is back on Mulberry Street for its 99th year! For 11 days, Little Italy is transformed into a vibrant celebration of Italian culture, drawing over a million visitors annually.
This year's festivities, running until September 21st, offer a delightful array of Italian delicacies, from sweet treats to savory dishes. The feast's history dates back to the early 20th century when Italian immigrants in Manhattan created a one-day block party to honor their patron saint, San Gennaro. This one-day party has since blossomed into an 11-day extravaganza spanning 11 blocks.
Highlights:
- High Mass and Procession: The high mass for San Gennaro will be held on September 19th at 6 p.m. at the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood, followed by a religious procession.
- Grand Marshal: Actor and comedian Joe Piscopo, a former "Saturday Night Live" star, will serve as this year's grand marshal.
- Location: The festivities take place in Manhattan's Little Italy, along Mulberry Street between Canal and Houston Streets.
"We are Italians! We love Italia and we love America of course, and this is the best feast you ever saw in your life," shared one enthusiastic attendee.
