NYC Subway & Bus Fares to Increase in 2026

The MTA has announced that subway and bus fares will increase by 10 cents, rising from $2.90 to $3, starting January 4, 2026. This fare hike, initially planned for August 2025, was delayed due to incomplete public process requirements.

Toll Increases Higher Than Expected

In addition to the fare increase, some tolls will see increases exceeding the anticipated 4%, with some rising as high as 7.5%. For example, the RFK Bridge EZ Pass toll will increase from $6.94 to $7.46.

MetroCard Phase-Out

The MTA also plans to eliminate MetroCards in favor of the OMNY system by January 4, 2026, impacting how riders purchase 30-day unlimited passes.

Changes to Online Rail Tickets

A change in the online rail ticket policy will also take place on January 4, 2026. Currently, online tickets are valid for 60 days unless activated earlier, but starting in January, they will be valid for only four hours after activation to deter fare evasion.

MTA Chairman's Justification

MTA Chairman Janno Lieber defended the fare and toll increases, stating that public transit is crucial for affordability in New York City.

Public Hearings and Vote

Public hearings on these changes are scheduled for August, followed by a final MTA board vote before implementation.

Recent Subway Delays

The announcement comes after a recent heat-related power outage caused significant delays on several subway lines, highlighting the challenges the system faces. This incident impacted signals at several Manhattan stations, causing trains to get stuck on red signals.
