NYC and NJ Devastated by Flash Floods
Severe storms brought flash floods to the New York City area and New Jersey on July 14, 2025, causing significant damage and prompting a state of emergency in New Jersey.
Dramatic Scenes of Flooding
Images show widespread flooding in northern suburbs of New York City and across New Jersey. Flooded roads and highways caused major traffic disruptions. In Scotch Plains, NJ, vehicles, including an ambulance and a bus, were stalled in high floodwaters. Rescues were performed to get people out of flooded vehicles.
In Plainfield, NJ, a house was partially submerged. Along the Saw Mill River Parkway, cars were stalled and partially underwater. Valhalla, NY, also experienced significant street flooding. A mall parking lot in Nanuet, NY, was completely inundated.

Flash flood warnings remained in effect for parts of the region. Rainfall totals exceeded six inches in some areas. The storms moved slowly, resulting in prolonged periods of heavy rain.
Governor Declares State of Emergency
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency in response to the severity of the flooding.
