NYC Hospital's Botched Circumcision Leaves Infant Fighting for Life
A Long Island newborn, Cole Jordan Groth, is critically ill after a circumcision at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital went horribly wrong. The parents, Tim and Gabrielle Groth, say their son nearly bled to death within hours of the procedure, suffering seizures and multiple organ damage.
A Routine Procedure Turned Nightmare
Cole, born on March 31st, was scheduled to go home on April 16th. However, two days before his discharge, the hospital asked the parents if they wanted a circumcision. Following the procedure, the baby's condition drastically deteriorated. His mother found him “pale, screaming and despondent” upon visiting the hospital.
Critical Condition and a Long Road to Recovery
Over the next 10 days, Cole received daily blood transfusions and underwent multiple surgeries, including one on his stomach due to intestinal damage from blood loss. Currently, he’s on a respirator, receives intravenous nutrition, and has a colostomy bag. His father describes his son as looking “like he’s been through war.”
Hospital's Response and Family's Concerns
The family filed a grievance with the hospital, questioning the delayed response to the bleeding and the apparent lack of urgent action. A hospital spokesperson declined to comment, citing patient privacy. The Groth family, with members in the medical field, believes the hospital failed to meet the standard of care.
A GoFundMe campaign has raised nearly $60,000 to help cover Cole's extensive medical expenses. While there have been some positive signs, such as no recent need for blood transfusions, the parents are concerned about potential long-term complications.
