NYC Congestion Pricing: Parking Wars Erupt in Residential Areas
Congestion pricing in NYC has sparked a parking battle outside the toll zone. Since its implementation, drivers are desperately seeking parking spots north of 60th Street to avoid the toll, leading to increased competition for limited spaces.
Residents Report Parking Conflicts
Residents in areas like the Upper West Side report an influx of out-of-state drivers, particularly those with New Jersey plates, occupying residential parking spots. Doormen and other residents describe heated arguments and disputes over parking spaces. One resident noted a significant increase in congestion and traffic near bridges entering the city.
Eyewitness News observed numerous vehicles with out-of-state plates parked near subway stations, further illustrating the issue. Double-parking and drivers creating their own parking spots are also becoming increasingly common.
While the MTA reports a 7.5% reduction in vehicles within the congestion zone, the spillover effect is causing significant parking problems in surrounding neighborhoods.

The Impact Beyond the Toll Zone
The unintended consequence of congestion pricing is the displacement of parking demand to residential areas outside the toll zone, creating new challenges for local residents and exacerbating existing parking issues.
