NYC Charter School Supporters Take a Stand
Parents and students from charter schools participated in a significant "Rally and March for Excellence" across the Brooklyn Bridge on Thursday, September 18, 2025. While billed as non-political, the event comes at a critical time in the mayoral race, with Zohran Mamdani currently leading.
The Rally and March:
The rally began at 9 a.m. in Cadman Plaza, followed by an 11 a.m. march across the Brooklyn Bridge, culminating in a press conference at City Hall. Notably, Success Academy, a leading charter network, cancelled classes to allow student participation.
Differing Opinions:
Success Academy CEO Eva Moskowitz highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by charter schools, citing "serious threats to the educational excellence" students deserve, though without directly mentioning Mamdani, a vocal opponent of charter school expansion. The event organizers explicitly discouraged mayoral candidates from speaking, aiming for a non-political focus. However, Curtis Sliwa, a mayoral candidate, is reported to have attended in support of charter schools.
Political Undercurrents:
The event's timing and the involvement of prominent figures highlight the deep divisions surrounding charter schools in NYC. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, a supporter of charter schools, emphasized their broad support and the seemingly irrefutable logic behind them. Conversely, opponents, including the teachers' union, express concerns about funding allocation and potential harm to traditional public schools. Currently, over 150,000 students attend 286 charter schools in NYC, representing almost 15% of publicly funded schools.
The Debate Continues:
The rally and march underscore the ongoing debate about the role and impact of charter schools within the New York City education system. The event served as a powerful display of support for charter schools while highlighting the political tensions surrounding their future in the city.
