This decision effectively eliminates the possibility of a Manhattan casino in this location. The project, a partnership with the Mohegan Tribe, included plans for two hotels, affordable housing, and a park. The vote, livestreamed on YouTube, concludes a string of rejections for downstate casino proposals.
Other Casino Plans Rejected
The recent rejection follows similar decisions against the Caesars Palace casino in Times Square and The Avenir in Hudson Yards. These rejections faced opposition from Broadway producers and community members concerned about increased congestion and the impact on local businesses.
Remaining Contenders
Five downstate proposals remain in the running for three available licenses. These include:
- Bally's Bronx at Ferry Point
- The Coney in Brooklyn
- MGM Empire City in Yonkers
- Metropolitan Park at Citi Field
- Resorts World New York City at Aqueduct Racetrack
Each proposal must secure approval from its local Community Advisory Committee by September 30th before being considered by the New York Gaming Facility Location Board.
What Went Wrong?
The Freedom Plaza proposal, while incorporating plans for affordable housing and a park, failed to win over the community advisory committee. The rejections of similar projects in Times Square and Hudson Yards highlight concerns surrounding increased congestion, potential negative impacts on existing businesses, and community disruption.
