NYC Anti-ICE Protest at Federal Plaza Leads to Arrests
On Saturday, at least 17 people were arrested and issued summonses during a protest at Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan against ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) detainments. Dozens of protesters demonstrated for hours, expressing their opposition to what they describe as aggressive immigration enforcement.
Some protesters linked their demonstration to the arrest of a man inside a Manhattan Federal courthouse on Friday. The man, Joaquin Rosario Espinal, was taken into custody by ICE agents despite having his immigration proceedings dismissed. DHS claims he resisted arrest and assaulted an officer. This incident, along with reports of ICE agents rounding up migrants near Lower Manhattan courthouses, fueled the Saturday protest.
The protest coincided with a similar incident in Paramount, Southern California, where protesters and federal agents clashed following an ICE raid. Homeland Security issued a statement addressing the increasing violence against ICE officers.
The NYPD maintained a presence at the Federal Plaza protest to monitor the situation.
