Kathy Hochul">Governor Kathy Hochul announced a major victory on Monday, securing the continuation of the Empire Wind 1 project. This crucial offshore wind initiative, initially halted by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, will now proceed, delivering 810 megawatts of power to Brooklyn – enough to power 500,000 homes.
Hochul revealed that she collaborated with the Trump administration to overturn the earlier decision, despite the administration's generally negative stance towards wind energy. This partnership resulted in the preservation of 1,500 union jobs and a significant step towards New York's renewable energy goals.
The project, however, has faced past opposition from the Trump administration, which has expressed concerns about the environmental impact on birds and voiced unsubstantiated claims about health risks associated with wind power. Despite these past disagreements, the current agreement underscores the importance of energy production in the face of a declared national energy emergency.
