Jets Rookie Tight End Mason Taylor: Following in the Footsteps of Legends
<img src="https://www.nfl.com/players/mason-taylor/" alt="Mason Taylor">Mason Taylor, the New York Jets' rookie tight end, is carrying a weighty legacy. As the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor and nephew of Hall of Famer Zach Thomas, both Miami Dolphins legends, expectations are high. But Taylor isn't shying away; he's embracing the pressure.
Embracing the Expectations
"There's high expectations, for sure, just because of the last name," Taylor shared. "But when people say, 'Oh, let him have his shine, stop saying his dad's name' -- I mean, I love it. We're family, him and my uncle Zach."
Taylor's impressive college career at LSU (55 receptions, 546 yards, 2 touchdowns) led to his selection in the 2025 NFL Draft's second round. This is a higher draft position than his father and uncle achieved.
A Promising Opportunity
The Jets' relatively thin receiving corps presents a significant opportunity for Taylor. With Justin Fields at quarterback and Garrett Wilson as the top receiver, Taylor could quickly become a key target.
"I mean, I want to be like them, so you can call it 'in their shadows,' but I love modeling my game after theirs, their hard work," he said. "I know they're on the defense, but just their hard work and how they weren't highly recruited coming into the NFL -- their hard work, consistency every single day. I mean, I look up to those guys, for sure."
Despite the immense pressure and the family legacy, Taylor remains grounded: "I'm here to play football. It's not about a number."
His father, Jason Taylor, played 15 seasons (13 with the Dolphins), earning six Pro Bowl selections, and his uncle, Zach Thomas, played 13 (12 with the Dolphins), earning seven Pro Bowl selections. Mason Taylor's journey is just beginning, but he has incredible role models to emulate.
