Queens Double Homicide Rocks NYC

A horrific double homicide has shaken the Queens borough of New York City. Frank and Maureen Olton, a 76 and 77-year-old couple, were found dead in their home after a fire. Police have apprehended a suspect, 42-year-old Jamel McGriff, who is accused of the murders and arson.

The Crime

Investigators say McGriff spent five hours in the Oltons' home before setting it ablaze. Surveillance footage shows him approaching the house and entering the backyard. Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the crime as a "horrific double homicide, robbery, and arson."

Mr. Olton was found tied to a pole in the basement with multiple stab wounds, while Mrs. Olton was found on the first floor, severely burned.

The Suspect

McGriff, with a lengthy criminal history, was released on probation in 2023. He was apprehended in Midtown Manhattan by observant police officers. Police believe his motive was robbery, but it remains unclear. Authorities reported that McGriff had attempted to gain entry to a nearby home earlier but was refused. Commissioner Tisch warned residents to be cautious about letting strangers into their homes.

McGriff served 16 years for a 2006 robbery. He has also been accused of several robberies in New York City in recent months and failed to register as a sex offender in November 2024, a parole violation.
