Harlem Legionnaires' Disease Outbreak: A Grim Update
A tragic update emerged from the ongoing Legionnaires' disease outbreak in Central Harlem, New York City. The death toll has sadly risen to seven, with over 114 people diagnosed with the illness. Health officials confirmed that one additional death, initially reported before mid-August, has been linked to the outbreak.
The source of the outbreak has been traced to contaminated cooling towers in 10 buildings, including a city-run hospital and sexual health clinic. Remediation efforts have now been completed on all affected towers.
Legionnaires' disease, a severe form of pneumonia, is caused by Legionella bacteria thriving in warm water systems. Symptoms, including cough, fever, headaches, muscle aches, and shortness of breath, typically appear within two weeks of exposure.
Residents and workers in Central Harlem are urged to seek immediate medical attention if they experience flu-like symptoms.
The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is continuing to monitor the situation and provide updates.
