Gaza Biennale: Art as Resistance in NYC
The Gaza Biennale, an exhibition featuring the work of over 25 Palestinian artists, has arrived in New York City. Hosted by Recess, an abolitionist arts non-profit, the exhibit showcases art created amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The Biennale organizers, who call themselves the Forbidden Museum, emphasize the importance of artistic creation even under extreme conditions. They highlight how art becomes a means of survival and resistance for Palestinian artists who have suffered devastating losses, including the destruction of their previous work.
A Biennale in Displacement
Due to the ongoing war and blockade of Gaza, the Biennale is a traveling exhibition, displayed in various locations worldwide, including Edinburgh, Valencia, London, and Padua, with upcoming shows planned for Istanbul, Athens, Sarajevo, Berlin, and Toronto.
The Forbidden Museum explains the challenge of exhibiting the art in a displaced format, reinventing and recreating – not copying – the works to adapt to their new contexts. This innovative approach allows the world to experience the art of Gaza, a location otherwise inaccessible.
Art as a Testimony
Many artists participating have lost their previous work due to the conflict. Their art offers a powerful testimony to their lived experiences, expressing pain, fear, and resilience. Murad Al-Assar, for example, collaborates with children, finding renewed energy and perspective through their innocent creations.
Tasneem Shatat, another artist, views her work as a “living archive,” documenting the stories of displaced Palestinians. She describes art as a form of psychological therapy, a tool for coping and healing amidst relentless conflict.
A Powerful Message
For the Forbidden Museum, the exhibition is a powerful act of defiance, giving a voice to the disempowered artists of Gaza and breaking through the blockade.
The Gaza Biennale at Recess in Brooklyn runs until December 20th.
