Broadway Beats Big Bucks: Jay-Z's Times Square Casino Dream Crumbles
The proposed Caesars Palace casino in Times Square, backed by Jay-Z and slated to redevelop a building housing the Minskoff Theatre (home to The Lion King), has been rejected in a stunning blow to the project's developers. The decision comes after intense opposition from the Broadway League, actors, stagehands, and local residents concerned about the potential negative impact on the theater district.
A Heated Battle in the Theater District
The $5.4 billion plan faced fierce criticism for potentially drawing tourists away from existing businesses and disrupting the neighborhood's unique atmosphere. Broadway workers staged protests and packed community hearings, voicing their concerns passionately. One general manager even sang a modified version of "New York, New York" to express his opposition.
While supporters argued the casino would create jobs and boost tourism, the community advisory committee ultimately sided with the opponents. Marc Holliday, CEO of SL Green (the project's primary developer), lashed out at the committee's decision, calling it a "despicable display of cowardice."
High-Profile Backers and a Civil Rights Museum
The project had attracted high-profile backers including Rev. Al Sharpton and former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton. It also included plans for a multimillion-dollar civil rights museum. Sharpton criticized the decision as maintaining the historical white control of Times Square's entertainment industry.
The Future of NYC Casinos
Several other casino proposals are still in the running across New York City. These include projects in the Bronx, Queens, and other Manhattan locations, with various stakeholders vying for the lucrative licenses. The final decision on these applications will be made by the state Gaming Commission in December.
