NYC Flooded: Emergency Declaration Amidst Devastating Flash Floods
A state of emergency has been declared for New York City and parts of New Jersey due to torrential rainfall and severe flash flooding. The afternoon storms brought rainfall rates exceeding 2 inches per hour in some areas, causing widespread disruption to transportation and infrastructure.
Subway and Transportation Mayhem
The intense rainfall quickly overwhelmed the city's drainage systems, leading to significant flooding in subway stations and on roadways. The LIRR's Port Washington branch was suspended due to flooding, and other lines experienced delays and service disruptions. Commuters faced major challenges during the evening rush hour.
The MTA warned riders to exercise caution on stairs and platforms due to flooding risks. Videos circulating online showed water pouring into Grand Central Terminal and vehicles stranded in deep water on the Clearview Expressway.
Impact on NYC Residents and Infrastructure
Mayor Eric Adams urged New Yorkers to stay home if possible and check on their neighbors. He specifically warned residents of basement apartments to move to higher ground immediately to avoid flooding. Alternate side parking was suspended for Friday to facilitate cleanup operations.
Unofficial rainfall totals showed nearly 2 inches of rain in parts of Staten Island in a short period. The Yankees-Rays game at Yankee Stadium was even delayed due to the heavy rain.
Airports and NJ Affected
NYC airports experienced significant delays, with inbound flights at Newark delayed by over 3.5 hours. New Jersey also declared a state of emergency, with acting Governor Tahesha Way urging residents to stay indoors and off the roads.
