This decision follows a letter from the Trump administration expressing concerns about such guidelines.
Adams stated: "We are going to always respect how one identifies themselves." However, he added, "I do not believe a safe environment is allowing boys and girls to use the same facility at the same time." He will investigate his executive authority to implement changes.
The current NYC guidelines, in line with state Human Rights Law, prohibit forcing students to use bathrooms conflicting with their gender identity. However, the federal Education Department argues that these rules conflict with Title IX.
This decision has sparked significant debate, pitting the rights of transgender students against concerns about safety and potential legal challenges.
