NYC Mayor Adams Hints at Dropping Out of Re-election Race
Mayor Eric Adams has reportedly implied he might withdraw from the mayoral race, surprising many after his public declarations of commitment. This revelation emerged from a closed-door meeting with city leaders, where three sources claim Adams suggested he'd prioritize the city's best interests over his own re-election bid if his poll numbers don't improve.
While his campaign maintains Adams remains committed, the statement contradicts his earlier firm stance against dropping out. The mayor reportedly expressed his disdain for rival Andrew Cuomo, stating "I love the city more than I dislike Andrew." This implies a potential strategy to clear the path for Cuomo, who is trailing democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani in recent polls.
Cuomo's team has reportedly pressured Adams to step down to improve Cuomo's chances against Mamdani. Meanwhile, Mamdani's campaign dismissed the speculation, stating "New York City is not for sale." Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa has confirmed his intention to remain in the race.
