NYC Student Arrested by ICE: Outrage Over Deportation
Another New York City public school student has been detained by ICE, sparking widespread anger and condemnation among officials. This incident follows the recent detention of another student, highlighting the Trump administration's intensified deportation efforts.
The latest case involves a junior at Grover Cleveland High School in Queens, who was arrested at an immigration court hearing. State Senator Michael Gianaris described the arrest as "routine," expressing outrage at the separation of families.
Councilwoman Jennifer Gutiérrez and Assemblywoman Claire Valdez have joined the chorus of condemnation, calling for the student's immediate release. They emphasized the injustice of apprehending minors who are complying with legal protocols and noted that the student's family hasn't heard from them in days.
This is the second such incident in recent weeks, following the detention of a Bronx high school student last month. Mayor Adams has filed a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the detained Bronx student, demonstrating an unusual intervention in the deportation issue. Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos expressed deep sadness, stating that the student should be home rather than in detention.
ICE agents have been actively detaining immigrants in lower Manhattan, targeting courthouses and migrant service centers as part of a national push to deport migrants, even those without criminal records.
The situation has reignited the debate on immigration policies and family separation in the United States, exposing the concerns surrounding the vulnerability of immigrant students within the education system.
