NYC Beaches Reopen After Hurricane Erin
New York City beaches have reopened after the passing of Hurricane Erin. However, high rip current risks remain, prompting officials to urge swimmers to enter the water only when lifeguards are present (10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily).
Long Island Beach Conditions
Beaches in Suffolk County remain closed until at least Saturday morning pending lifeguard assessment of red flag warnings. Long Beach in Nassau County anticipates reopening for swimming on Saturday. Jones Beach's summer fest has been postponed.
Easthampton has reopened to foot traffic, but swimming and driving on the beach are still prohibited.
Jersey Shore Beach Status
New Jersey officials are yet to announce their beach plans. Governor Murphy declared a state of emergency due to strong winds, flooding, and beach erosion. He warned of life-threatening rip currents and advised against entering the water.
Despite warnings, some swimmers ignored the risks in Sea Bright, where no lifeguards were on duty. Several Jersey Shore towns experienced street flooding during high tide.
Stay safe and check local advisories before heading to the beach!
