- City inspectors ordered 49 food establishments closed at least once in October, according to Health Department inspection records on NYC Open Data: 18 in Brooklyn, 14 in Manhattan, 12 in Queens, 5 in the Bronx and none on Staten Island.
- Pests drove most of them. At 45 of the 49, inspectors cited mice (25), filth flies (24), live roaches (21) or rats (7) on the day of the closure.
- 38 had been allowed to reopen by the latest update to the data (Oct. 30). Eleven, including a Dunkin' on Coney Island Avenue, had no reopening on record yet.
- The Health Department can close a restaurant when it finds a public health hazard that cannot be fixed on the spot, or when the place is operating without a valid permit.
- You can check any restaurant's grade and inspection history on the city's ABCEats lookup or by calling 311.
Health inspectors ordered 49 restaurants, cafes and bakeries across New York City to close at least once in October, according to the Health Department's restaurant inspection records on NYC Open Data, which we pulled on Wednesday. Most have since passed a reopening inspection. Eleven had no reopening on record as of the data's latest update on Oct. 30.
PIX11 reported on the October closures Wednesday, drawing on the same city records, and said they included a Dunkin' location. An independent tracker built on the city data, NYC Restaurant Grades, also counts 49.

What inspectors found
Pests were the common thread. At 45 of the 49 places, inspectors cited at least one pest violation on the day of the closure: evidence of mice at 25, filth flies at 24, live roaches at 21 and evidence of rats at 7. Other violations that showed up often were conditions that attract pests, food not protected from contamination, hot food held below 140°F and missing or badly placed hand-washing sinks.
A closure is different from a bad grade. Restaurants get an A for 0 to 13 points on an inspection, a B for 14 to 27 and a C for 28 or more, the Health Department says. Separately, the department may order a restaurant closed to correct a public health hazard that cannot be fixed right away, or when it is operating without a valid permit. A closed restaurant has to pass a reopening inspection before it can serve customers again. Several places on this list failed that first reopening check and were closed again before they passed.
No reopening on record yet
These 11 had no reopening inspection in the city data as of Oct. 30. Some may have reopened since, because the dataset lags by a few days. Check the restaurant on ABCEats before you go.

How to check a restaurant
Every inspection result, including the specific violations, is on the city's ABCEats lookup, which you can search by name or address. You can also call 311. Grade cards have to be posted where people passing by can easily see them. A restaurant that scores a B or C on reinspection can post either that grade or a "Grade Pending" card until its grade is settled at a hearing before the city's Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings.
