NYC's City Island Under Siege by 'Party Pirates'
Residents of City Island are fed up with the disruptive noise and safety hazards caused by large gatherings of boaters, dubbed "party pirates," who anchor near Hart Island and blast music from powerful speaker systems. These gatherings, sometimes involving scantily clad individuals and even stripper poles, have escalated in recent years, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic.
The noise levels are described as unbearable, waking residents even at late hours. Longtime residents express frustration with the growing intensity of these parties, which often continue late into the night and even into the early morning hours. The issue is not isolated to a single location, but spans across the area's waterways.
Safety Concerns Escalate
The noise pollution isn't the only problem. In June, a 35-foot party boat caught fire, injuring nearly two dozen passengers, and the captain was charged with drunk driving. This incident highlights the serious safety risks associated with these large, often unregulated gatherings.
Calls for Increased Enforcement
Residents and local officials, including Council Member Kristy Marmorato, are calling for increased police presence from the NYPD Harbor Unit and the US Coast Guard to deter these activities. While the NYPD reports issuing summonses, residents feel it is insufficient. The Coast Guard has not yet responded to requests for comment.
James Reichelt, leader of the "NYC Pirates" jet ski club, acknowledges the disruption and attempts to encourage responsible behavior among participants, emphasizing a desire for cooperation with local residents. However, he also notes the difficulty in controlling the actions of all attendees.
The situation underscores a conflict between the desire for recreational enjoyment and the need to maintain peace and safety within residential communities. Discussions are ongoing to find solutions that balance these competing interests.
