NYC's Fight Against Antisemitism: A Zero-Tolerance Policy
New York City's First Deputy Mayor, Randy Mastro, has taken a strong stance against the rising tide of antisemitism in the city. In a recent interview, he emphasized a zero-tolerance policy, highlighting the alarming statistic that 62% of all hate crimes in the first quarter of 2025 targeted the Jewish community. While hate crimes against Jewish New Yorkers are down 6% compared to the same period last year, they still constitute a shocking 56% of all reported hate crimes.
The city has established the Mayor's Office to Combat Antisemitism, directly overseen by Mastro, to address this critical issue. The office aims to educate, set a positive tone, and implement effective policies to combat hate. While specific policy details are yet to be announced, Mastro assures a strong response.
The article also briefly touches upon other issues Mastro is addressing, including the Fifth Avenue redesign and the planned closure of Rikers Island by 2027.
