Memorial Day 2025 in New York City was a day filled with both solemn remembrance and vibrant community celebrations. The day marked the end of Fleet Week, offering a unique blend of military tributes and public events.
A Moving Ceremony at the Intrepid Museum
The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum hosted a poignant Memorial Day ceremony. The event featured the unfurling of the American flag, the laying of wreaths in the Hudson River, a moving "Echo Taps" performance, a rifle salute, and a Navy jet flyover. 93-year-old Michael Horvath, a veteran who served on the USS Intrepid, attended the ceremony, sharing his memories. Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the importance of honoring those who served.
Free military demonstrations by the Army, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard were also available to the public, alongside public ship tours.
Brooklyn's Historic Memorial Day Parade
Bay Ridge, Brooklyn hosted its 158th annual Memorial Day Parade, a beloved community tradition. The parade, led by Major General Kris Belanger, saw crowds lining the streets to honor fallen service members. Veterans Lenny Deutsch and Steve Miller stressed the importance of remembering the true meaning of Memorial Day – a day of remembrance, not just shopping.
