In 1984, he personally helped restore a dilapidated six-story building at 742 East 6th Street, the organization's first NYC project.
A Hands-On President:
Contrary to expectations, Carter didn't just make a symbolic appearance. Rob DeRocker, the project's executive director, recalls Carter being the first one on the job each day, requiring others to literally make him stop working.
Current resident Don Kao, unaware of the building's history when he moved in, was astonished to learn that Carter had worked on his very apartment. He expressed regret at never having met the former president.
More Than Just Hammers:
Carter's involvement wasn't just about construction; it was about revitalizing a community. The project took place in the Lower East Side, which, at the time, had the city's highest murder rate. His dedication brought national attention to Habitat for Humanity and launched numerous subsequent projects worldwide.
Carter's actions extended far beyond this initial project; his commitment to Habitat for Humanity continued for years, shaping his enduring legacy of service.
