Hudson River Helicopter Crash: Major Update

The main rotor and roof structure from last week's fatal helicopter crash in the Hudson River have been recovered, marking a significant step in the ongoing investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The key components are now in the hands of the NTSB and will be crucial to determining the cause of the accident.

The NTSB acknowledged the assistance of the NYPD, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and the Jersey City Office of Emergency Management in the recovery efforts. Following the tragedy, New York Helicopter Tours, the company involved, has grounded all flights and faces an emergency order from the FAA suspending operations.

The crash tragically claimed the lives of six people, including three children, who were part of a family visiting from Spain. The pilot, identified as a Navy veteran, also perished. The FAA has announced a comprehensive review of the tour operator's license and safety records, as well as a nationwide analysis of airplane and helicopter hotspots, culminating in a helicopter safety panel on April 22nd.

Details of the Incident

The helicopter, carrying the pilot and the Spanish family, crashed into the Hudson River on April 11th, shortly after departing from the Wall Street Heliport. Initial reports suggest the helicopter fell into the water inverted, lacking a tail rotor or main rotor blade.

The NTSB continues its investigation, examining the helicopter's flight control systems. The helicopter's last major inspection was on March 1st; the crash occurred during the eighth flight of the day, following seven prior successful tour flights.

Mayor Eric Adams offered his condolences following the incident, expressing sympathy for the victims and their families.

The investigation aims to uncover the circumstances that led to this devastating accident and prevent future tragedies.
