Velvet Cowboy, the UWS saloon where everything on the food menu is $5, at the old Jacob's Pickles on Amsterdam Ave.
The Jacob's Pickles team turned its original space at 509 Amsterdam Ave. into a '70s Western bar with $5 burgers, Frito pie and a 'VcRib.' Eater NY gave it a rave this week.

Velvet Cowboy on the Upper West Side prices every item on its food menu at $5. The bar, from Jacob Hadjigeorgis's Pickle Hospitality Group (Jacob's Pickles, Maison Pickle, Tiki Chick), took over the original Jacob's Pickles space at 509 Amsterdam Ave., between West 84th and 85th streets, and opened on Tuesday, Sept. 29, Patch reported.
This week Eater NY gave it a glowing write-up, calling the '70s-meets-Texas saloon a "psychedelic, maximalist Western fever dream" and saying the $5 food comes without the shortcuts you'd expect at that price.
What $5 gets you
From the bar's posted menu, all at $5:
- Burgers: an American smash burger and a Rodeo smash burger with onion rings and barbecue sauce (double it for $2.50 more).
- Chili and pies: Texas chili con carne, and Frito or Takis pie with chili, cheddar and pickled jalapeño.
- The VcRib: the bar's take on the fast-food rib sandwich, with BBQ "Bronco" sauce and hot sour pickles. Eater called it "a winner."
- Sides: cowboy fries, cheese fries, chili cheese fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, grilled cheese, and a vegan "cowboy caviar" of beans and peppers with tostadas.
- Dessert: funnel cake with dulce de leche and a fried Twinkie.
The food is by chef Steven Yen and the cocktails by Michael Walters, according to Patch. Drinks cost more: the menu lists house cocktails at $16 to $17, and Eater paid $15 each for a gin Ranger Rickey and a malted Dr Pepper frozen drink.
Hours, reservations and the room
- Hours (from the bar's website): Monday to Thursday 4 p.m. to 1 a.m.; Friday 3 p.m. to 2 a.m.; Saturday 2 p.m. to 2 a.m.; Sunday 2 p.m. to 1 a.m.
- Walk-ins are welcome in the front saloon. The back cocktail lounge takes reservations on Resy for 90-minute seatings, I Love the Upper West Side reported.
- Age: 21 and over with valid ID after 6 p.m.
Inside, Eater describes fringed turquoise and orange barstools, a wall of framed Western landscapes and a decommissioned cigarette machine up front, and a darker velvet-and-lace lounge in the back. Jacob's Pickles itself moved to a larger space at 680 Columbus Ave., between 93rd and 94th streets.
