SportsNet New York, the regional sports network that broadcasts New York Mets and New York Jets games, canceled two long-running studio shows and laid off much of its editorial staff on Friday.
Shows ending
SportsNite, the daily New York sports news and highlights program that launched with the network in 2006, and Baseball Night in New York, a half-hour Mets and Yankees studio show, ended immediately, Sports Media Watch confirmed. amNewYork, citing The Athletic, reported that hosts Sal Licata and Eamon McAnaney were among those let go.
Sports Media Watch noted that SportsNite had been the only daily New York sports news studio show among the market’s three regional sports networks.
What SNY said
“As part of our regular review of our business, operations and programming, SNY has decided to cease broadcasting Baseball Night in New York and SportsNite,” the network said in a statement provided to Sports Media Watch. “We are grateful to those team members that helped bring these programs to fans for many years. Ongoing coverage of the Mets and New York sports are at the heart of SNY’s business, and we remain focused on continuing to deliver high-quality content to our passionate fans.”
What continues
Mets and Jets pre- and postgame shows remain, along with Mets Hot Stove, a midweek Jets program and the WFAN Carton Show simulcast, amNewYork and Sports Media Watch reported. On-air contributors Chelsea Janes, Connor Hughes and Ian Begley are staying. The Athletic reported that the SNY website will emphasize scheduling and promotion rather than news articles — a change both outlets relayed.
Neither outlet published a headcount for the layoffs. SNY launched in March 2006 and has a Mets broadcast deal that runs through 2035, according to coverage summarized by Sports Media Watch and amNewYork.
