Oren, Tal and Alon Alexander, brothers who lived mainly in New York and Miami and two of whom were prominent luxury real estate brokers, were each sentenced Tuesday to 30 years in federal prison for sex trafficking and related crimes, NBC News and amNewYork reported.

U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni handed down the sentences in Manhattan federal court, seven months after a jury found the three guilty. Prosecutors had asked for life in prison, while defense lawyers sought the mandatory minimum. Caproni called the brothers' conduct "monstrous" but said she did not believe they were beyond redemption, NBC News reported.

What the judge ordered

  • 30 years in prison for each brother, followed by 10 years of supervised release;
  • sex-offender treatment approved by probation, and no contact with children under 18 unless probation approves it;
  • fines of $300,000 each for twins Oren and Alon, 39, and $350,000 for Tal, 40.

Caproni also said she would ask the Bureau of Prisons to consult experts on whether the brothers should be held together, because she considers them a bad influence on one another, according to NBC News.

The case

A jury convicted the brothers on March 9 on 10 counts, including conspiracy to commit sex trafficking and sex trafficking by force, after a trial of about six weeks in which 11 women testified, amNY reported. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York said at the time that the evidence showed the brothers conspired to lure, drug and rape young women. Prosecutors said the abuse spanned about a decade, and in a sentencing memo they said more than 70 women had come forward with allegations, NBC News reported.

Victim statements from 11 women, some using court-assigned pseudonyms, were read in a crowded courtroom before the sentence was imposed. The brothers have maintained their innocence. Sentencing had originally been set for Aug. 6 before it was pushed to October, amNY reported. ABC News also reported the sentences.
