Who is Jumaane Williams? Next in Line for NYC Mayor
Jumaane Williams, New York City's current Public Advocate, is next in line to become Mayor if Eric Adams were to leave office. This follows Adams' indictment on five federal charges, including bribery and conspiracy. Adams has denied wrongdoing and resisted calls to resign.
Williams, a former city councilman, has served as the Public Advocate since winning a special election in 2019. He has a long history of activism and advocacy in Brooklyn, particularly focusing on police reform, affordable housing, and transparency in city government.
A Community Organizer from Brooklyn
Williams is a first-generation Brooklynite of Grenadian heritage. He graduated from the city's public school system and earned a Master's Degree from Brooklyn College despite challenges with Tourette's and ADHD diagnoses. He began his career as a community organizer at the Greater Flatbush Beacon School and later served as the Executive Director of NYS Tenants & Neighbors, advocating for affordable housing across New York City.
As a city councilman, Williams championed police reform legislation, including the Community Safety Act, which aimed to reform the NYPD by ending the abuse of Stop, Question & Frisk and establishing an Office of Inspector General to investigate wrongdoing. He also co-chaired the Council's Task Force to Combat Gun Violence, helping create New York's Crisis Management System, which funds Cure Violence Groups to reduce shootings.
Williams has stated his commitment to fighting for better policing, safer streets, affordable housing, and transparency and accountability in city government. He has also been involved in various activist movements, including Occupy Wall Street.
In the wake of Adams' indictment, Williams has emphasized his commitment to working with fellow elected officials and public servants to ensure the city continues to operate smoothly. He has also expressed his disbelief and indignation at the situation, describing it as a painful time for the city.
