WCBS 880 Signs Off After Nearly 60 Years

After almost 60 years on the air, WCBS 880 AM, one of New York's leading news radio channels, will be replaced by ESPN New York on August 26th. This change comes as 1010 WINS becomes the primary radio station for real-time news coverage in the New York metro area.

Audacy, the parent company for both WCBS 880 and 1010 WINS, announced the agreement with Good Karma Brands, a sports media network, on August 12th. The station 880 AM will be rebranded as WHSQ-AM (pending FCC approval) and will become the new home of ESPN New York.

1010 WINS Remains the Sole All-News Station

Audacy confirmed that 1010 WINS will remain the only 24/7 exclusive all-news station for the tri-state area, and will continue to broadcast on 92.3 FM. Despite the change, Audacy will still produce and broadcast sports content, including coverage of the New York Mets, on the station.

WCBS 880's Legacy of News

Chris Oliviero, president of Audacy's New York market, acknowledged the significance of WCBS 880's history: "WCBS 880 has been one of the most respected radio stations in history, with a legacy cemented by the hundreds of world-class journalists... If it happened in New York or the world, you heard about it on WCBS 880."

WCBS 880 AM transitioned from music and radio to an all-news format in August 1967 and has remained a staple in the tri-state area for over 57 years.

1010 WINS Remains the Oldest All-News AM Station

1010 WINS has been providing local, traffic, and weather news to millions of New Yorkers since April 1965. Audacy launched a simulcast on 92.3 FM in October 2022, which now boasts a listenership of nearly two million people per week.

Audacy plans to honor WCBS 880 with a special live broadcast on August 22nd, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The broadcast will feature interviews and historical clips highlighting key moments in New York history where the radio station played a vital role in delivering information to listeners.
