Upper West Side Tourist Slashed: Suspect Arrested
A 55-year-old tourist from Denmark was slashed on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Joshua Zinberg, 25, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and assault. The attack occurred Wednesday morning near 114 W. 86th Street.
The Attack:
Zinberg, a resident of the Upper West Side, allegedly stopped his orange Subaru Crosstrek, pulled out a knife, and slashed the victim, a former professional soccer player who was walking with friends.
The Suspect:
Zinberg, who lives a block from the scene, has a history of prior police interactions and known mental health issues. He was uncooperative with authorities upon arrest. His mother reportedly contacted police after recognizing him on the news.
The Victim:
The victim was treated at Mount Sinai Hospital and released after surgery.
Mayor Adams's Statement:
Mayor Eric Adams connected the incident to the city's ongoing mental health challenges, stating, "This is a problem that was created when we closed the psychiatric facilities many years ago. We closed them without giving people the support that they deserve."

This attack comes on the heels of three fatal, unprovoked stabbings in Manhattan, further highlighting concerns about public safety.
