Trump's Hush-Money Sentencing Delayed Until After Election - What Does This Mean?

The judge presiding over Donald Trump's hush-money case in Manhattan has postponed sentencing until after the 2024 election. This means that voters will not know if the former President will face jail time before they head to the polls.

Trump, the Republican nominee, was convicted in May on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels to silence her about an alleged sexual encounter with Trump.

Trump's legal team requested the delay, arguing that a pre-election sentencing would unfairly influence voters' perceptions and potentially affect the election's outcome. The Manhattan District Attorney's office did not object to the delay.

The judge, Juan Merchan, acknowledged the politically sensitive timing of the sentencing, stating that postponing the decision would dispel any suggestion of bias towards any political party or candidate.

The decision to delay sentencing comes as Trump's legal team is also seeking to overturn the verdict on immunity grounds. The judge is expected to rule on this request on September 16, just two days before sentencing was initially scheduled.

Trump's conviction in New York stemmed from his involvement in a scheme to cover up a $130,000 payment made to Daniels just before the 2016 presidential election. The jury found that Trump falsified business records to disguise the nature of the reimbursement, a conviction that carries a potential sentence of up to four years in prison. However, as a first-time offender, Trump could receive a lighter sentence or probation.
