Trump Tower & 'New York, New York'? Kari Lake's Song Mishap Exposed by Songwriter's Nephew

Kari Lake's Trump Tower Song Mishap: A Family Affair

Arizona GOP Senate nominee Kari Lake, a Trump-endorsed election denier, made a rather embarrassing gaffe at a recent rally. While reminiscing about her 52nd birthday celebration with Donald Trump in New York City, Lake connected the iconic “Theme from New York, New York” to Trump Tower, saying "This was Trump Tower, this was New York City."

However, Jason Kander, nephew of the song's co-writer John Kander, took to social media to set the record straight. Kander reminded Lake that Trump Tower, which was built several years after the song's release, was not the inspiration behind the iconic tune. "My uncle wrote that song. I assure you, he wasn’t thinking about Trump Tower," wrote Kander.

Kander also took the opportunity to subtly endorse Lake's Democratic opponent, Ruben Gallego, in the Arizona Senate race.

Lake's misunderstanding of the song's origins has generated a buzz on social media, highlighting the enduring influence of “New York, New York” and the sometimes-blurred lines between pop culture and political discourse.
