Trump Tower Mishap: Kari Lake's 'New York, New York' Song Mistake
Kari Lake's 'New York, New York' Mistake
Arizona Senate candidate, Kari Lake, a Trump-backed election denier, made a humorous gaffe during a campaign rally in Arizona on Friday. Lake, who celebrated her 52nd birthday with Donald Trump in New York City, linked the iconic song "New York, New York" to Trump Tower, stating she was reminded of the song as she used “that famous golden escalator” and “golden elevator” to reach the 26th floor of the skyscraper.
She went on to say, "Donald Trump had indeed built that, a big part of the skyline of New York. And I — and I thought to myself, so is this what Frank Sinatra sang about in ‘New York, New York,’” referencing the singer’s hit cover of a song originally performed by Liza Minnelli.
However, Jason Kander, nephew of the song's co-writer, John Kander, took to social media to politely correct her. Kander pointed out that the building was completed several years after the song's release.
He tweeted, "Kari, My uncle wrote that song. I assure you, he wasn’t thinking about Trump Tower, which didn’t even exist at the time. Also, he supports @RubenGallego."
Trump Tower & 'New York, New York'
The song, originally written by Kander and Ebb, was meant to capture the essence of New York City as a whole and was not specifically tied to Trump Tower or any other particular landmark. The iconic song is known for its bold lyrics and inspiring message about achieving success and overcoming challenges. It has been covered by numerous artists over the years, including Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, and the band The Five Satins.
While Trump Tower is a significant part of New York City's skyline, it was built in 1983, years after the song's release in 1978.
Trump Tower's Significance:
Trump Tower is a 58-story skyscraper located on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Built in 1983, it was designed by architect Der Scutt. The building is a prominent landmark in New York City and is known for its gold-plated exterior.
'New York, New York' Lyrics & Meaning:
"If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere, It’s up to you, New York, New York. If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere. So people say, New York, New York..."
These lyrics embody the spirit of New York City, a place of opportunity, ambition, and determination.
Lake's Other Gaffes
This is not the first time that Kari Lake has been criticized for her comments. She has been a vocal supporter of Donald Trump and has made numerous controversial statements about the 2020 election.
She has also been criticized for her lack of policy experience. Some voters have expressed concern that she is not qualified to represent the state in the U.S. Senate.
The Arizona Senate Race
The Arizona Senate race is a highly competitive contest. Lake is facing off against Democratic incumbent Kyrsten Sinema. The race is expected to be close and could have a significant impact on the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.
