Trump Blames NYC Crime on Illegal Immigration, Citing Coney Island Rape

Former President Donald Trump, during a live interview with X owner Elon Musk, claimed that New York City is being "overwhelmed" by illegal immigration and used the recent knifepoint rape of a woman near Coney Island as an example.

Trump criticized Vice President Kamala Harris's performance as "border czar", claiming "millions" of migrants are entering the US illegally each month under the Biden administration. He specifically blamed current immigration policy for the increase in crime in NYC.

"I saw it today in New York, where somebody was knifed, where they raped the girlfriend of a man that stood there watching in New York in one of the shelters and started pulling out the knives," Trump explained. "And bad things happen today, but this is happening every day."

Trump was referring to the Sunday night attack, where a 46-year-old woman was raped at knifepoint near the Coney Island boardwalk in Brooklyn. Two homeless men, migrants from Nicaragua and Mexico, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Trump asserted that New York City is struggling with the influx of immigrants and expressed frustration with the courts for focusing on him rather than addressing the issue. He went on to praise his own immigration policies, stating that he had implemented "Remain in Mexico" and other measures that were "so good."

The White House has disputed the characterization of Harris as "border czar", with Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre calling it "false." Harris's campaign also responded, saying Trump's "extremism and dangerous Project 2025 agenda" was on display during the interview.

Trump's Claims Under Scrutiny

Trump's comments come as the issue of illegal immigration continues to be a hot topic in the 2024 presidential election. While he paints a dire picture of the situation in New York City, his claims have been met with pushback from the Biden administration and Harris's campaign. The conversation surrounding immigration is likely to remain a prominent issue in the upcoming election.
