NYC Parks Employee Dies Battling New Jersey Wildfires Amid Air Quality Warnings

Tragedy struck during a weekend of widespread wildfires across New York and New Jersey, claiming the life of an 18-year-old New York parks employee. Dariel Vasquez, a Parks and Recreation aide, perished on Saturday afternoon while fighting a brush fire along the New York-New Jersey border. A tree fell on him, according to the Eastern Dutchess County Fire and Rescue and New York state forestry services.

The fire, dubbed the Jennings Creek wildfire, has spread to 3.9 square miles (about 10 square kilometers) near the border in Passaic County’s West Milford and Orange County, New York. As of Sunday, it threatened 14 Greenwood Lake structures, as well as two New Jersey homes and eight buildings in the state’s Long Pond Ironworks Historic District.

Air Quality Warnings Issued

Health advisories have been issued for parts of New York, including New York City, and northeastern New Jersey due to unhealthy air quality caused by smoke from the fires. Residents are urged to limit strenuous outdoor physical activity, especially the very young and very old, and people with ailments such as asthma and heart disease.

Additional Wildfires

Besides the major blaze in New Jersey, firefighters are tackling numerous other wildfires in the region. A 175-acre (70-hectare) fire in the Pompton Lakes area of Passaic County has been 75 percent contained but still threatens 55 homes.

Other fires are reported in the Bethany Run area on the border of Burlington and Camden counties in Evesham and Voorhees townships; a blaze along the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Englewood Cliffs in Bergen County; and the Pheasant Run wildfire in the Glassboro wildlife protection area of Gloucester County.

Arson Charges in Ocean County

In Ocean County, prosecutors have announced arson and firearms charges in connection with a 350-acre (142-hectare) Jackson Township fire that started Wednesday. Authorities claim it was sparked by magnesium shards from a shotgun round on the berm of a shooting range. Officials stated that firing this kind of “incendiary or tracer ammunition” is prohibited in the state. The majority of the blaze has been contained.

Massachusetts Wildfires

Massachusetts is also grappling with wildfires fueled by powerful wind gusts and dry leaves. One wildfire in the Lynn Woods Reservation, a municipal park in Lynn, Massachusetts, has burned more than 200 acres. Firefighters continue to battle the blaze, citing low humidity, winds, and dry leaves as contributing factors.

Drought and Dry Conditions

New England is experiencing a dry spell, with most of the region categorized as being in drought or abnormally dry. The drier-than-normal weather is expected to continue. While some light rain is forecast for Sunday night, there are no large rainfall events predicted in the near future.

California Wildfires

Firefighters in California are also battling wildfires, including one north of Los Angeles that has burned more than 100 structures. Evacuation orders have been downgraded to warnings for residents in several areas of Ventura County, where the Mountain Fire holds at around 32 square miles (about 83 square kilometers) and is 26% contained.

Fire Safety

Firefighters and forest agencies are urging the public to refrain from outdoor burning due to the dry conditions. Stay informed and follow official guidelines for wildfire prevention and safety.
