Top Legal Advisor to NYC Mayor Resigns Amidst Federal Investigations
The top legal advisor to New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Lisa Zornberg, has resigned abruptly, adding to the growing instability in his administration. The resignation comes as multiple federal investigations swirl around the mayor and his inner circle.
Zornberg, who had advised Adams and other city officials on legal strategy for over a year, offered a brief resignation letter stating she could no longer effectively serve in her position.
This resignation follows the recent seizure of phones from several key members of Adams' administration by federal investigators. This includes the head of New York City's police department, Edward Caban, who resigned earlier this week, citing the “distraction” created by the investigations.
Other officials whose phones were seized include the head of the public schools system, a top deputy mayor, and two top advisers to Adams on public safety issues. Federal authorities are also conducting searches related to individuals connected to the mayor's close circle, including the brother of Adams' top deputy on public safety and the Education Chancellor.
These investigations have also previously targeted Adams himself, with federal authorities seizing his phones and conducting searches on properties linked to his associates.
While Mayor Adams has denied any wrongdoing, the mounting investigations continue to cast a shadow over his administration, with calls for accountability growing louder by the day.
An interim replacement for Zornberg is expected to be announced in the coming days.
