Tiny NYC Studio Transformed: Minimalism Meets Midcentury Chic

A 500-Square-Foot Studio in Greenwich Village: Minimalism Meets Midcentury Chic

This 500-square-foot studio in Greenwich Village is a masterclass in making the most of a small space. Designer Alex Kalita transformed a white-box rental in a historic Art Deco building, creating a stylish and functional space that balances minimalism and midcentury influences.

The studio is divided into distinct zones for sleeping, living, and dining, maximizing space while maintaining a sense of flow. Kalita employed a restrained palette of soft textiles and earthy tones, complementing the building's original architectural details. Vintage finds and custom pieces blend seamlessly, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.

Key Design Elements:

• Strategic zoning: Distinct areas for sleeping, living, and dining are created using furniture placement and a vintage headboard that doubles as storage.
• Midcentury Modern influences: A vintage headboard and a custom dining banquette with fabric covering add a touch of midcentury elegance.
• Textural interest: Bouclé fabrics and a rich, warm rug create a cozy and inviting ambiance, while also providing sound absorption in the otherwise echoey space.
• Artful accents: The client's personal art collection plays a prominent role, adding personality and creating focal points.
• Sustainable design: Kalita focused on modular and flexible pieces that could be easily moved, ensuring the design is adaptable to future living arrangements.
