The Spy Exchanged for a Journalist: Vadim Krasikov's Story
Vadim Krasikov, a man sentenced to life in prison in Germany for the brazen assassination of a former Chechen separatist fighter in a Berlin park in 2019, was recently released as part of a major prisoner exchange between Russia and the West. This exchange, the largest since the Cold War, saw the release of three Americans, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, along with several Russian political dissidents.
Krasikov, a former K.G.B. agent who worked for the Federal Security Service (FSB), was believed to have carried out the assassination order directly from President Vladimir Putin. This order was given under a 2006 law allowing Russia to extrajudicially kill those deemed extremists or terrorists abroad.
Despite his conviction, Krasikov was deemed valuable enough to be included in the prisoner swap, highlighting the importance of his role in the Russian intelligence services and the potential for future assassinations under Putin’s regime.
Zurab Khangoshvilli, the brother of the assassinated man, described the case as “business as usual” for the Russian security services, highlighting the dangerous pattern of sending agents to kill abroad and then using the threat of violence to secure the release of prisoners.
The exchange serves as a stark reminder of the lengths that Putin’s regime is willing to go to in order to achieve its goals, and the potential for continued conflict in the coming years.
