</figure>Alexander Ector Orr, a key figure in the development of the New York City subway system, has been honored in his hometown of Strabane, Northern Ireland. Orr, who emigrated from Ireland to the United States in the 1850s, played a crucial role in the financing and construction of the city's iconic underground network.
He was instrumental in building the initial 9.1-mile line, which stretched from City Hall in Lower Manhattan to 145th Street in Harlem, and opened to the public in 1904.
A blue plaque was unveiled on Wednesday in Strabane, commemorating Orr's contributions. The plaque, located on the Credit Union building, stands near the site of Orr's former home.
Chris Spurr, chairman of the Ulster History Circle, described Orr as the "Father of the New York subway." The subway system, serving millions of passengers daily, is now one of the busiest rapid transit networks in the world.
Maud Hamill, also of the Ulster History Circle, said Orr, like many of his contemporaries, left Ireland in search of a better life in America.
"Many people have sadly never heard of him," she told BBC News NI. "His house in Strabane is sadly gone, but the plaque was placed on the Credit Union building which was very close to his original home."
Hamill added, "Strabane certainly has a lot of talent and is certainly well represented."
Darren Guy, Deputy Mayor of Derry City and Strabane, stated that the blue plaque is a "wonderful way to celebrate our links with the US" and "highlight the important role many local people played in the foundation of the nation."
He added, "Alexander Ector Orr should be remembered here in his home town where I hope more people will now find out about his significant achievements."
Orr is one of five individuals being commemorated in the second series of blue plaques funded by Derry City and Strabane Council.
