New York City experienced a wet Thanksgiving Day in 2024, with steady rain impacting the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Despite the downpour, the parade went on successfully, with spectators advised to wear rain gear. Temperatures hovered in the 40s and 50s. Fortunately, wind speeds remained manageable, ensuring the balloons could safely fly.

Upstate New York Sees Snow

In contrast to the city's rain, areas north and west of NYC, such as Ulster and Sullivan counties, received significant snowfall. A winter storm warning was issued for western Ulster County, with potential snow accumulation up to 10 inches in certain locations. A winter weather advisory was also in effect for Sullivan County.

Post-Parade and Black Friday Forecast

The rain eventually tapered off in the afternoon, leaving a dry evening. Rainfall totals remained manageable at 0.5 to 1 inch, offering some relief amidst the ongoing drought. However, gusty winds were expected as the storm system moved out. Temperatures varied across the region, from the 50s along the coast to the upper 30s in northwestern suburbs.

The remainder of the holiday weekend is predicted to be mostly dry but colder, with a slight chance of rain or snow showers on Black Friday. Highs will be in the mid-40s on Black Friday, dropping into the 30s for the rest of the weekend. Cold temperatures are expected to continue into the first week of December.
