New Yorkers with disabilities are facing a serious accessibility issue in the city's subway system. The MTA is under fire for failing to address large gaps between trains and platforms at various stations, despite spending billions on other accessibility upgrades.

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), these gaps should not exceed 2 inches vertically and 4 inches horizontally. However, the outdated subway system often presents much larger gaps, posing a danger to wheelchair users, seniors, and individuals with visual impairments.

A lawsuit filed in 2022 against the MTA by disabled riders alleges the agency is violating the city's Human Rights Law. The plaintiffs recently won a court victory that keeps New York City, the owner of the subway system, as a defendant in the case.

The MTA has proposed a plan to make 95% of stations accessible by 2055, but this ambitious goal is in jeopardy due to the pause on congestion pricing that has cut funding for accessibility projects.

This situation highlights a pattern of policy and design choices that exclude older New Yorkers and individuals with disabilities from fully accessing the city's public transportation system. It's a reminder that accessibility should not be an afterthought in infrastructure development.
