Soros-Backed Group Paid New York Dem Candidate's Salary: Is This a 'Fellowship' or a Shady Deal?
Laura Gillen, a Democratic House candidate from New York, received a $40,000 salary from the Our American Future Foundation (OAFF) in 2023. The foundation is heavily funded by George Soros' political empire. This has raised eyebrows, with critics questioning the transparency and legitimacy of this arrangement.
What's the issue?
The OAFF claims the payment was for a 'fellowship' program designed to support aspiring political candidates. However, critics argue this is a thinly veiled way for Soros to funnel money to candidates aligned with his political agenda. Caitlin Sutherland, executive director of the nonprofit watchdog group Americans for Public Trust, said:
"It is incredibly problematic that George Soros is paying candidates to run for office through a program disguised as a ‘fellowship.’"
The OAFF has also received direct funding from the Jennifer and Jonathan Allan Soros Foundation, a charitable group run by one of Soros' sons.
Is this a conflict of interest?
Gillen has been accused of being beholden to Soros and not the voters if elected to Congress. This accusation is fueled by the fact that Soros has been a major funder of left-wing political causes and groups, including those that support open borders, anti-police measures, and radical energy policies.
Is this a pattern?
Gillen is not the only Democratic candidate to receive funding from the OAFF. Will Rollins (California), Tony Vargas (Nebraska), Kirsten Engel (Arizona), and Josh Riley (New York) are among those who have benefited from this arrangement.
What's next?
The nonprofit watchdog group Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission alleging that the OAFF's payments to future House candidates violate federal law. The complaint argues that the fellowship is designed to advance the political prospects of these candidates and is not a legitimate form of employment.
This story is sure to continue unfolding as the 2024 election cycle progresses.
