Queens E-Bike Shop Catches Fire For The Second Time

A Queens e-bike shop went up in flames for the second time in a year, according to the FDNY. The fire, which investigators suspect was caused by a lithium-ion battery exploding at around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, left a pile of scorched and twisted bikes in its wake.

The FDNY said this incident is not the first at this establishment. The previous fire, which also occurred in the back area where the shop maintains and stores e-bikes, took place during the summer of 2023.

Dangerous Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries have been blamed for numerous fires in New York City. The FDNY has investigated over 100 lithium-ion battery fires in 2024 alone, resulting in at least 50 injuries.

The New York City Department of Buildings is also investigating the latest fire to determine if residents in surrounding buildings can return to their apartments.

Citywide Fire Concerns

The fire in Richmond Hill adds to the growing concern about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries in New York City. Earlier this month, a man died from injuries suffered in a lithium-ion battery fire in Brooklyn. Three other people were injured in the fire. In February, 27-year-old Fazil Khan died in another lithium-ion battery fire at a Harlem apartment building, injuring 17 others and displacing dozens.

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation this year aimed at getting dangerous lithium-ion batteries off the streets and out of homes. The legislation is intended to address the growing number of fires and injuries related to the batteries.
