Prospect Park in Brooklyn Hit by Brush Fire Amid Northeast Drought
Prospect Park in Brooklyn was the site of a brush fire Friday night, adding to the growing list of incidents fueled by a drought plaguing the Northeast.
The fire, which broke out on a hill in a densely wooded area of the park, was quickly contained by the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). Firefighters used drone technology to locate hot spots and will remain at the scene overnight to ensure the fire is completely extinguished and no embers are carried by the wind. Thankfully, no structures were threatened and there were no reported injuries.
The FDNY is investigating the cause of the fire, but it highlights the increased fire risk due to the ongoing drought.
The drought, characterized by dry and warm conditions, has been ongoing for weeks and has already led to fires in neighboring states like New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams urged residents to remain vigilant and call 911 if they notice any fires.
Prospect Park is a beloved urban oasis spanning 526 acres, offering a haven for recreation and nature amidst the city. It is home to a zoo, a skating rink, and a variety of flora and fauna.
The fire serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our natural resources and the need for ongoing efforts to address the impacts of climate change.
